So there's a video going around of a group in Madrid, mostly in Spain shirts, beating up someone in an Argentina jersey. Police are investigating, reason unknown. And of course, the internet's reaction has been a mess. I'm not here to report the news; I'm here to vent about the reactions. Because some of the takes I've seen make me want to bang my head against a wall.

First off, violence is never the answer
Let's get this straight: attacking someone over a football shirt is braindead. Full stop. There's no excuse. I don't care what shirt they're wearing. You don't put hands on someone because of fabric. That's not passion; that's assault. And anyone trying to justify it can get in the bin.
But wearing an Argentina shirt in Madrid? Come on, mate
Now, I'm not justifying the attack. Obviously. But let's be real: if you walk through certain parts of Madrid in an Argentina shirt, you're asking for trouble. Not because you deserve it, but because football rivalries run deep. Spain vs. Argentina? That's not just a game. There's history, there's tension, there's a whole lot of bad blood. Especially after the whole 'they're not a real football nation' nonsense that some Argentinians spout. So yeah, it's stupid to wear that shirt there. Doesn't mean you should get beaten up, but it's like walking into a pub in Glasgow wearing a Rangers shirt if you're a Celtic fan. You're just poking the bear.
Why does everything have to be political?
And then there's the political angle. Someone in the thread said this happens a lot with left-leaning white people. I'm a leftist and Hispanic, and I kinda get where they're coming from. A lot of my white lefty friends try to boil every international issue down to good vs. evil, and it's exhausting. They did it with Venezuela, Iran, El Salvador. Their hearts are in the right place, but they have no clue about the complexity. They just want to be on the right side of history. It's like they're collecting oppression points. And when you try to explain nuance, they act like you're the problem. It's frustrating as hell.
Football and politics are intertwined, whether we like it or not
You can't separate football from politics. The Argentina shirt isn't just a shirt; it's a symbol. For some, it represents resistance, for others, arrogance. And in Spain, it might represent something else entirely. The same goes for the Spain shirt. So when you wear one in the wrong place, you're making a statement, whether you mean to or not. That doesn't excuse violence, but it's naive to think it's just about football.
What about Brazil?
Someone pointed out that Brazil recently kicked out the right-wing ultra-capitalist. And that's true. But that doesn't mean Brazil is some leftist utopia now. It's complicated. Just like Argentina. Just like Spain. Reducing countries to their current political leaders is lazy. And using that to justify wearing a shirt or not is dumb. Wear what you want, but be aware of the context.
At the end of the day, football is supposed to be fun. It's not worth getting hurt over. So wear your shirt, but use your head. And for the love of god, don't be a dick.
