Classic Manchester United and Dortmund shirts reimagined as trainers

In the wave of enthusiasm that’s surrounding football shirts at the moment, we’ve seen famous designs on all sorts of items. Socks, hats and scarves have been covered with all the patterns and colour combinations that we know and love, and in a new series The Graphic Bomb are taking things one step further.

The new collection of shirts as trainers illustrations superbly combines classic shirts with famous trainer silos. Many fan favourites are on display, from Dortmund’s legendary 1994 design (the one with the eagles’ wings) to Liverpool’s popular grey 1989 away, and the manufacturer of each shirt has naturally been used to drive the choice of footwear.

What I like about this collection in particular is the way @wearethegraphicbomb has weaved in the sponsors of the various kits into the trainers. Many people lament shirt sponsors, but I have an ongoing fascination with corporate logos on kits. Though there are many sponsors which ruin the aesthetics of a kit, there are many more which help to give a design its full identity.

Manchester United’s, ‘snowflake’ 1990 away shirt simply isn’t the same without the Sharp logo in tandem. Man City’s glorious Kappa kits were made extra special by the logo of long-term partners Brother. The Graphic Bomb’s acknowledgement of these relationships, and the application of the various logos, is a triumph.
